Feeling depressed? The new science of terpenes suggests these Limonene-rich strains

If you’ve been keeping up with cannabis science, you’ve definitely heard about terpenes, or “terps.” Terpenes are chemical compounds responsible for flavors and scents in many plants. Over 200 known terpenes are found in cannabis. One of the most famous terps is limonene. This terpene is responsible for the scent and flavor we associate with citrus fruits. But it’s also found in the resin glands of cannabis. Limonene may have powerful medical benefits. According to WebMD, limonene is found in the peels of citrus fruits, and in "other plants." It’s used to promote weight loss, prevent cancer, treat cancer, and treat bronchitis. In manufacturing, it makes an appearance as either a fragrance, or an ingredient in water-free hand sanitizers. In pharmaceuticals, limonene acts as an aid to medicinal ointments and creams to help penetrate the skin. Recent evidence suggest it may even help block carcinogens. Limonene is one of the most abundant terpenes in all strains of cannabis. (It’s second only to myrcene, the most common terp in cannabis.) The chemical form limonene can take in each major strain may smell different, however. One can smell more lemony, while another more like tangerine. Limonene can even taste like grapefruit in some cannabis strains. No matter the taste though, this aromatic terpene is said to produce a myriad of desirable effects when combined with THC. Some of these effects such as elevated mood, and stress relief are classic aspects of what people consider being “stoned.” Other effects include antifungal and antibacterial properties. It can also potentially de-escalate heartburn and gastric reflux. There are surely countless strains that come to mind when you think of cannabis that smells lemony, piney, or tangy. Limonene typically tends to make an appearance in popular sativa, and sativa-dominant hybrid strains such as Jack Herer, Super Lemon Haze, Tangie, and Durban Poison. These are all sativa-dominant strains meant to uplift you mentally and physically, and stimulate brain activity. It’s no surprise then, that limonene has also been suggested to work as an antidepressant, as well as an overall aid to anxiety and stress. If you’re seeking more limonene-rich sativa cannabis strains, also look for Gorilla Glue #4, Dirty Girl, and Cinex. The only real indica that pulls up strong amounts of limonene that you can fairly-often find at the store is Hindu Kush.
